Transport 2000 Canada is a non-profit organization whose primary purpose is research, public education and consumer advocacy. It promotes environmentally-sound transportation solutions and gets actively involved in a wide range of issues such as: public transportation, safety, accessibility, energy efficiency, protection of the environment, intermodal cooperation and government regulation.

14 October 2009 24 October 2009: Transport 2000 Canada Annual General Meeting in Ottawa

1:00 pm, The Bronson Centre, 211 Bronson Ave. at Lisgar, Rm. 221. (Transport 2000 office is Rm. 303).

Short business meeting followed by expert panel discussion on Ottawa's rail transit technology selection, proposed downtown transit tunnel, and interprovincial transit. There will also be a briefing on our involvement with air passenger safety issues.

28 August 2009 Dr Barry Wellar has announced the list of Websites Selected for Transportation Day, Geography Awareness Week 2009 (16-20 November). These websites promote the natural connections between geography and transportation. 13 August 2009 Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has announced: "Second Amtrak Cascades train to Vancouver, B.C. begins service August 19".

A second Seattle-Vancouver Amtrak daily train trip will begin 19 August 2009. According to WSDOT: "The Canadian government approved the second train service on July 3 as a pilot project to start as soon as August 1 until after the 2010 Olympic and Paralympics Winter Games. WSDOT worked with Amtrak, BNSF Railway, U.S. Customs, and other stakeholders to get the additional Amtrak Cascades service operational as soon as possible."

"With the addition of this second train service, travelers from Oregon will now have direct round-trip service between Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, B.C."

The Talgo train equipment, which was refurbished over the past year, will also return to this service. Superliners had replaced the equipment in the meantime. For further details, see www.amtrakcascades.com.

09 July 2009 The federal government has given border clearance for Amtrak to operate a second daily Seattle-Vancouver Amtrak train during the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics. 13 December 2008 Transport 2000 issued this press release regarding how a rail shuttle can reduce traffic chaos during Chaudière Bridge closure. Although the bridge has since partially reopened to automobile traffic, this critical interprovincial bridge remains restricted to two lanes and truck traffic has only one remaining available bridge in the Ottawa region for at least the next several months.
24 November 2008 Sault Ste Marie, Ontario: Thursday 27th November 2008, Harry Gow, founding president of Transport 2000, spoke at a public event to build support for a train route linking Sault Ste Marie, Hearst and Sudbury. This Coalition for Algoma Passenger Trains "town hall" meeting will be held at Algoma University's Shingwauk Auditorium at 7 pm. For more details, please see the poster (JPG). 22 November 2008 Dr. Barry Wellar, Distinguished Research Fellow, Transport 2000, has been commissioned by Transport Canada to conduct the study, Methodologies for Identifying and Ranking Sustainable Transport Practices in Urban Regions. 19 September 2008 Dr. Barry Wellar, Distinguished Research Fellow at Transport 2000, and Professor Emeritus, University of Ottawa, identifies five catalysts for change in transportation thinking in his latest paper, Cutting to the Chase in Designing New Measures of Transportation System Performance.
17 August 2008 Dr. Barry Wellar, Distinguished Research Fellow at Transport 2000 Canada, and Principal, Wellar Consulting Inc., has been awarded a contract from Transport Canada to undertake a survey of international experts and Canadian government officials on Methodologies for Identifying and Ranking Sustainable Transport Practices in Urban Regions. Transport 2000 is pleased to post the outline of this important project. 09 June 2008 On December 9, 1975 the Ottawa Citizen published a column by Barry Wellar titled, "Taking steps towards the end of the automobile era". Current concerns about the state of the auto industry, diminishing fossil fuel supplies, the need to get heavily into the transit mode, impacts of urbanization processes, etc., were discussed in the article written 33 years ago by the Distinguished Research Fellow at Transport 2000. The column was re-published as part of a Lecture program of the Association of American Geographers in Boston in April, and we are pleased to post Dr. Wellar's article for viewing by visitors to this website.

As our record of 30 years makes clear, we believe that transportation is a critical feature of Canada's economic, social, environmental, technological, and political fabric. And, we further believe that geography is a fundamental factor to consider when making decisions about all aspects of transportation, and especially about planning for and achieving sustainable transport systems.

22 April 2007 Transport 2000 Ontario AGM is Friday 27th April 6:30 pm in Toronto at Metro Hall, 55 John Street at King, Room 302. The guest speaker is Mitch Stambler, who is responsible for TTC infrastructure planning.

The Transport 2000 National AGM is also in Toronto, at room 308/309 of Metro Hall at 2:00 pm Saturday 28th April. It begins with a speakers' panel with TTC Chair Adam Giambrone, GTTA Chair Rob McIsaac, and award-winning transit activist Steve Munro.

The T2000 Canada national board meeting is also taking place the same weekend at Metro Hall on Saturday and Sunday morning. A welcome participant at these meetings is Transport 2000 Prairie's director for disabilities, Mellissa Northe, from Regina, who will be speaking on transport issues for the disabled.
